Tanisha C. Ford, in her book 2015 publication Liberated Threads: Black Women, Style, and the Global Politics of Soul noted the following:

“The soul women were earning top dollar in royalties, endorsement deals, and club appearances. By 1964, Nina Simone had an endorsement deal with Crest toothpaste that in today’s dollars paid $150,000 for a single print advertisement.
