The use of John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman's music in this way absolutely appalling.
The twentieth episode from season 13 (2012) of Law & Order: SVU, “Father Dearest,” has a typically disturbing plot, with Coltrane and Hartman’s rendition of “My One and Only Love” at the crux of it. In this episode – spoiler alert – a man takes advantage of young women who never met their father. He contacts them, convinces them that he is their father and then seduces and sleeps with them. One of the key methods the rapists does this is by playing the near jazz-sacred version of “My One and Only Love” when along with the victim. A large portion of the piece is played.
This episode originally aired on NBC on May 2, 2012 to 6.62 million viewers.
